Cosmetology Students Achieve in State Competitive Events
Students in the Cosmetology program at Jordan-Matthews High School competed in competitive events during the annual North Carolina Skills USA conference held in Greensboro.
The program, the only one of its kind in the county, has participating students from all the county high schools including SAGE Academy. Juniors and seniors are eligible to take Cosmetology courses that are taught by JoAnn Braxton. The students train for a career for hairstyling, nail care, and skin care.
They implement what they have learned with community clients on Thursdays and Fridays in a salon setting at Jordan-Matthews.
This year, all of the Chatham County state event competitors were juniors. June Hart, from Chatham Central, placed second in the Hair Coloring event. She demonstrated her skills in performing a three-dimensional hair color. Maria Navarro, from Jordan-Matthews, finished fourth in the Cosmetology event that included two haircuts, a long hair put-up, and two styles.
Joanna Vazquez, from SAGE, earned a fifth place finish in the Artistic Nails category. In this competition the students did one hand with a set of tips and overlays while the other hand was acrylic. The students were allowed to choose their own themes. Vazquez chose 'Nail Down Spring' and framed the hands with ivy and petite white flowers using green and white nail polish in her color scheme.
The juniors have spent less than 500 hours of the 1200 hours required for completion of the Cosmetology program. It's quite an accomplishment for them to have competed so successfully at the state level. We are anticipating even greater success in the competitive events next year, said Braxton.
Other Jordan-Matthews competitors were Latoya Fox, who competed in the Artistic Nail event; Christian Vicente and Liliana Pulida, both of whom participated in the Cosmetology event. Maria Guerrero, a Northwood student, competed in the Men?s Haircutting contest.
