ISP In-Cosmetics presentation to feature new sun block improving ingredient

International Specialty Products, a world leading supplier of specialty ingredients for the cosmetics industry, used In-Cosmetics exhibition to introduce X-Tend 226, a novel ester with high solubilizing capacity for use in sunscreen formulations.

Although X-Tend 226 was launched in Europe in late 2003, In-Cosmetics 2004 provided the platform for its wider introduction to the cosmetics industry.

To counter the detrimental effect of UVA radiation on the skin, Oxybenzone and Avobenzone are usually included in broad spectrum and high sun protection factor sunscreen formulations. Oxybenzone provides UVB absorption as well as some absorption in the short UVA-II region; Avobenzone is broadly effective in the UVA 320-400 nm spectrum.

However, in order to deliver optimum performance these oil-soluble powders must be fully solubilized in the oil phase of formulation. If not completely solubilized these ingredients will crystallize-out and this will result in an unpleasant and unstable formula with lower SPF than desired.

To overcome this potential issue ISP developed easy to formulate X-Tend 226, a new proprietary polar ester with high solubilizing capacity for Oxybenzone and Avobenzone, as well as for other solid organic sunscreen materials. Moreover, X-Tend 226 gives an added benefit in that it can increase the critical wavelength and the UVA/UVB ration of some formulations to provide more effective UVA protection.

This combination of performance properties makes X-Tend 226 an ideal ingredient for both sunscreens and daily wear products such as anti-aging creams. Furthermore, because X-Tend 226 is a relatively light ester it also contributes to aesthetic improvement in these applications by helping to counteract the oily feel of actives, particularly in sunscreen formulations, to deliver excellent skin feel.
