Innovative gelled esters designed for skin care

Penreco's newly introduced Versagel MP series--MP750 and MP1600--are the second in a series of gelled esters that have a variety of applications in cosmetic and personal care products. Based on isopropyl Palmitate, Versagel MP joins the Versagel MN products as newly gelled more polar materials.

Versagel MP products give skin a drier, more comfortable feel and add occlusivity, which protects skin and enables it to retain natural moisture. Versagel MP products also have good clarity, excellent thermal and UV stability and a versatile chemical compatibility.

The gellant system in the Versagel MP products adds rich body to formulations and also gives it excellent film forming properties, said Lin Healy, senior research associate at Penreco's technology center headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas. Ideal applications for Versagel MP products include sun screens, shower moisturizers, body lotions, after sun soothing gels, massage oil gels, lip glosses, hair and scalp conditioners and makeup. Versagel MP can also be used as a pharmaceutical excipient.

Another unique property of all of our Versagel products is they work well with pigments and other fine particles or encapsulated liquids. This allows color cosmetic pigments and physical sunscreen actives to be easily suspended or dispersed with minimal settling and agglomeration, Healy says.

Healy adds that suspension vehicles could include such applications as zinc oxide; titanium dioxide; iron oxide and talc; decorative glitters; and encapsulated nutrients, such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C.
