Twenty-two young men and women from the youth center, The Door in New York City, get a new look….and a new outlook

Twenty-two teenagers were the lucky recipients of makeovers sponsored by L'Oreal Classic Salon Products in conjunction with Sally Beauty Company's SallyCares outreach program. The teenagers are members of the Soho youth center, The Door.

Hair and makeup artists, haircolor technicians and other personnel from L'Oreal, Sally, MTV and Oxygen Network worked one on one with the teens. While the young men opted for hairstyling and grooming advice, the young women chose to change their haircolor and wanted to learn how to apply makeup. The teens had the opportunity to choose their new hair colors from the FERIA Professional Multi-Tone Haircolor swatch books.

The mood was upbeat as the teenagers talked about why they wanted to participate in the makeover sessions. Many of them said it would help with their self-confidence, it would make them feel better about themselves, help them get a job, fit in at school and would improve their social skills.

The results were rewarding. Not only did their physical images improve but as the day progressed the young people became more outgoing and exuberant, taking the initiative to make conversation, share their feelings and offer assistance to others in the salon. They also frequently checked out their new appearances in the mirrors around the salon.

The SallyCares Program began as a way to support causes that can make a difference in women's lives. One of those causes is the SallyCares Shelter Program. Working with the beauty industry, Sally Beauty Company provides needed personal care assistance and important guidance to women in need.

Ernie McCraw, Executive Director of the SallyCares program says, "We would like to thank L'Oreal Classic Salon Products for hosting this event which helped give these teens an important sense of self-esteem. Over the past three years, SallyCares has worked closely with more than 40 women's shelters nationwide. L'Oreal has generously supported our efforts, and because of their day-to-day involvement with people on a personal level, the company consistently manages to greatly impact the lives of others."

Founded in 1972, The Door's mission is to empower young people ages 12-21 to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services such as health care, counseling, education, legal services, the arts and recreation, in a diverse and caring environment.

Melanie Bermudez, a career counselor at The Door, adds, "Door members come from all five boroughs and represent the diversity of ethnic groups that make up New York City. Events like this are an important extension of our services that help give them the confidence they need to get ahead in the future."
